Coaching Physicians: The Power of Finding your Person
The Need for Connection
Are you drawn to the “new thing? How often do you get a new iPhone, look at new car models, or update the software you use at work? What drives you to invest in and try new technology? FOMO – the fear of missing out- is real. The desire to keep up and feel relevant pushes us to try the latest versions of things, hoping they might improve our lives. Social media makes reinforces the feeling that happiness is one purchase, click, or subscription away.
Have you wondered what might be missing in today’s society? What if, instead of the newest gadget, what you really need is a person- or connection.
When was the last time you sat down and genuinely connected with someone? When did you last have a conversation that left you feeling truly heard? During my burnout, I realized that one of the main reasons for my unhappiness was a lack of connection. I didn’t have anyone who felt comfortable enough to tell me, “Hey, I don’t think you’re okay.” It wasn’t until a caring colleague asked how I was doing that I understood I needed help.
The Challenges Physicians Face
As a physician, you have a hard job. In addition to practicing medicine, you are potentially a mentor, administrator, educator, or researcher. Due to all of the hats you wear, it can be hard to find the time to focus on your personal and professional growth. This is where coaching comes in. Coaching is a highly beneficial yet underutilized resource that could help you.
The Essence of Physician Coaching
Coaching is about building relationships, listening, and finding someone who holds you accountable while providing a safe space to be yourself. It offers a unique opportunity for physicians to reflect on their career paths, establish actionable goals, and develop strategies to achieve them. With a coach’s guidance, physicians can navigate the challenges of the medical field with greater confidence and accountability, translating aspirations into tangible accomplishments.
Physician Coaching to Develop Leadership Skills
Coaching also equips physicians with vital leadership skills. By providing personalized training, coaches teach physicians to lead with empathy, make informed decisions, and motivate their teams effectively. Effective communication, the foundation of patient care and team collaboration, is another area where coaching can help. Coaching empowers physicians to refine their communication skills, enabling them to convey complex medical information clearly and empathetically.
Enhancing Emotional Intelligence
In medicine’s high-stress, high-stakes world, emotional intelligence (EQ) is just as important as intellectual ability. Coaching helps physicians better understand their emotions and those of others. This emotional awareness is critical in managing stress, navigating complex patient interactions, and leading teams with compassion.
Strengthening Teamwork
Coaching also strengthens teamwork by teaching physicians to inspire and engage their teams effectively. It encourages a culture of mutual respect, openness, and shared objectives. And for physicians looking at the next step in their careers, coaching is invaluable in preparing them mentally and emotionally for the challenges ahead.
The Power of Connection
Looking at the burnout and dissatisfaction in healthcare, it’s clear there are many issues. But what I believe physicians really need is a person. Sometimes, instead of seeking the latest gadget, what you really need is someone to connect with, someone who can help you grow personally and professionally. That’s the transformative power of coaching.
