How to Answer the Interview Question: “Why Did You Apply to Our Medical School?”

When preparing for your medical school interview, one of the most common questions you are likely to be asked  is “Why did you apply to our medical school?” This question may seem straightforward, but crafting a thoughtful and genuine response can set you apart from other premedical students. Here are some tips on how to effectively answer this question:

1. Research the Medical School

   Before your interview, make sure to thoroughly research the medical school you are applying to. Familiarize yourself with its mission, values, curriculum, and any unique programs or opportunities it offers. Tailor your response to demonstrate that you have a genuine interest in the school. Most of this information is easily found on the schools webb page and social media. Another good way to find out about a school is to connect with current students. Many student run clubs and organzations have active social media accounts.

2. Highlight Specific Reasons

   Instead of giving a generic answer, identify specific reasons you are drawn to the medical school. This could include factors such as the school’s strong reputation in a particular specialty, its commitment to community service, or its innovative approach to medical education. If you have ties to the med school or the region- make sure to mention them. Medical school is stressful and having support near the school can factor in your favor. 

3. Connect Your Values

   Reflect on how your personal values align with those of the medical school. For example, if the school prioritizes diversity and inclusion, you could discuss how your background and experiences contribute to a diverse learning environment.

4. Show Enthusiasm During Your Medical School Interview

   : Demonstrate your enthusiasm for the school by expressing excitement about the prospect of studying there. Share specific anecdotes or experiences that illustrate your passion for becoming a future physician at that particular institution.

5. Be Honest and Authentic

   Above all, be honest and authentic in your response. Avoid giving a generic answer that could apply to any medical school. Instead, share your genuine reasons for choosing that specific institution and how it aligns with your goals and aspirations. There is not one correct answer to the question, “Why do you want to attend out medical school?”, so be yourself and answer in a way the shows your best qualities!
